Childhood & Youth

Where It All Began

Professor Milton Regis was born in Rio de Janeiro on February 7, 1964. When he turned nine, his father brought him to the Kioto Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy in Tijuca. Milton was being bullied at school, and his father knew that training would help him find his footing.

It was there that he met Francisco Mansor, and that meeting changed the course of his life. Milton competed throughout his childhood and became a state champion many times over, earning medals and personal compliments from Grand Master Helio Gracie along the way. Under Mansor, Kioto stood as undefeated champion for 19 straight years in the state of Rio de Janeiro.

One introduction on the mats in Tijuca set the entire Kioto story in motion. Read the full Kioto lineage.

Under the Kioto Lineage

Francisco Mansor was more than an instructor to Milton. He was the man who carried the Kioto name and passed it directly to him. That connection is why the academy on Long Island still carries the Kioto name today, a straight line back to Tijuca and to the roots of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu itself.

From Brazil to Long Island

A Champion Who Never Stopped

Milton served as a lieutenant in the Brazilian Army for nine years and graduated from FACHA in 1993 with a degree in Public Relations. All the while, he kept competing and kept winning, building one of the deepest championship records in the sport.

In 2001 he moved to the United States and began teaching at the Brazilian Martial Arts Center in Somerville, Massachusetts. In 2003 he came to Long Island, teaching in Ronkonkoma, West Islip, and East Rockaway. In 2005 he opened Kioto South Shore, and he has been on these mats ever since, still training and rolling with students at every level.

A three-time world champion who still steps on the mat with white belts. That is rare, and it is the heart of Kioto.

A Family on the Mats

Milton teaches alongside his wife and black belt partner, Professor Melissa Regis. Together they have four children, Diogo, Mariana, Michael, and Sebastian, and six grandchildren, Bernard, Draico, Atlas, Silas, Emrys, and Beatriz.

Milton is also co-founder of the Pride BJJ Championship. That family-first spirit is what students feel the moment they walk through the door, on the mat and off it.

More than a martial arts school. A family, a tradition, and a place where champions are made.
