A dedicated class where you actually learn the basics of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu the right way, step by step, with no pressure and no experience needed.
Our beginner Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class in Oakdale is where every new student starts, and it is a big part of what makes Kioto different. Instead of throwing you into the deep end, we teach you the real basics of Jiu-Jitsu, one piece at a time, with people whose whole focus is helping you learn.
You will build a foundation you can trust, from controlling position to your first submissions. It is patient, it is welcoming, and it is genuinely built for day one. Many students train it right alongside the gi and no-gi classes.

Our Fundamentals class is led by Professor John Passannante, who has a real gift for breaking the basics down so anyone can understand them. He meets you exactly where you are and makes sure you leave each class knowing a little more than when you walked in.
A few of our experienced students jump in to help teach and train too, so you always have someone in your corner while you find your footing.
We start with the pieces every great grappler is built on, then put them together through repetition.
Learn the immobilizations and positions that let you stay safe and in control on the ground.
Build your first reliable submissions and understand how and why they work.
Turn technique into instinct with focused, repeatable drilling every single class.
Structured, supportive, and paced for people who are brand new to the mats.
Professor John walks the class through the day's technique, then you drill it with a partner until it starts to click.
A few of our advanced students are on the mat to guide you, correct details, and answer questions as you go.
Class usually ends with a couple of live rolls. You are always welcome to jump in, but you never have to.

Students who walked in nervous and never looked back.
This is by far the best Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu school on Long Island. A traditional school focused on developing technical skill through hard work and discipline, but always welcoming and warm.
The camaraderie at Kioto is like nothing I have experienced. Kioto is our home away from home and I consider all my training partners family.
My four children and I have studied here for 15 years. The instruction is high quality and the people are of the highest character.
