The Foundation

What Is Gi Jiu-Jitsu?

Gi Jiu-Jitsu in Oakdale is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu trained in the traditional uniform, the gi. The jacket and belt become part of the game, giving you grips and control that make the gi the truest test of technique and the best place to build your foundation.

Training in the gi is a bit slower and more strategic than no-gi, which is exactly why it teaches patience, precision, and problem-solving. It is where the belt system lives and where most students at our Oakdale academy build their game.

The gi is the truest test of technique, and the best place to learn it right.

Why Train in the Gi

Slow It Down, Level It Up

The gi forces you to solve problems with technique instead of speed and strength. That patience pays off everywhere, including in no-gi and in real self-defense, where an attacker is usually wearing clothing you can grip.

  • Builds a rock-solid technical foundation
  • Teaches patience, timing, and strategy
  • Sharpens grip fighting and defensive skills
  • Home of the traditional belt progression

Gi or No-Gi?

Not Sure Where to Start? Train Both.

Most of our students train the gi and no-gi together. The gi builds your technical base, and no-gi sharpens your speed and scrambles. You get access to both at Kioto.

FAQs

Gi Jiu-Jitsu, Answered

What is Gi Jiu-Jitsu?+

Gi Jiu-Jitsu is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu trained in the traditional uniform, the gi. The jacket, collar, and sleeves become tools for grips and control, which makes the gi the foundation of the art and the best place to learn technique.

Do I need to buy a gi to start?+

No. Come try a free class first in comfortable athletic clothes. When you are ready to commit, we will help you pick out the right gi.

Should beginners start in the Gi or No-Gi?+

Most beginners start in the gi because it builds a strong technical base, but we teach both here in Oakdale. Many students train the gi and no-gi together from the beginning.

Do kids train in the Gi too?+

Yes. Our kids classes are gi-based, which helps teach discipline and respect right alongside real Jiu-Jitsu technique.

What do the belt colors mean?+

The gi belt system marks your progress in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, earned through skill, consistency, and time on the mat. Adults move from white through blue, purple, brown, and black, with a separate belt system for kids.
