Testimonials

Real People, Real Results

Adults who walked in as beginners and never looked back.

This is by far the best Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu school on Long Island. A traditional school focused on developing technical skill through hard work and discipline, but always welcoming and warm.

My four children and I have studied here for 15 years. The instruction is high quality and the people are of the highest character.
Randy Gonzales
The camaraderie at Kioto is like nothing I have experienced. Kioto is our home away from home and I consider all my training partners family.

FAQs

Adult BJJ, Answered

Do I need any experience to start?+

Not at all. Most of our adults walk in with zero background. Our fundamentals classes teach you the basics step by step in a safe space, so you can start our adult BJJ classes in Oakdale with real confidence.

What is the difference between Gi and No-Gi?+

In Gi classes you train in the traditional kimono and use the grips it offers. No-Gi is faster and relies on body control and hooks instead of grips. Most adults train both, and beginners are welcome in either.

Will Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu get me in shape?+

Yes. Our adult BJJ classes are a full-body workout that builds strength, mobility, and conditioning while you learn a real skill, which is why so many students find it easier to stay consistent than a standard gym routine.

How often should I train as a beginner?+

Two to three classes a week is a great starting point and lets the technique sink in without burning you out. Check the class schedule to find times that fit your week here in Oakdale.

Is BJJ actually good for self-defense?+

It is one of the most proven self-defense systems there is because it teaches you to stay calm and in control on the ground. We weave self-defense into every adult class.
